Jean-Claude, so you´re an actor for over 25 years now. Was it your alltime-vision, your dream for a lifetime? Do you still remember that very moment you discovered: „I would like to become an actor!“?
I was in my late teens when I realized that this was something I really wanted to do. I came up the hard way, initially busing tables, driving people around, until I got my first break. It was a dream come true.
Your father brought you to work out in martial arts – karate! What could have happened if he didn´t do this?
This is a question the answer to which we will never know, because he did do it.
In another interview you confessed to have been a bit naive when your career kicked off. What exactly do you mean with this?
I did not really know much about the movie business, so like any young fellow there was a certain mix of innocence, excitement and expectation. This is pretty normal for many people.Things are not always as easy as they seem, but you learn with time.
„Six Bullets“ was the last movie in which I have seen you in action. Gorgeous performance you showed us there! Does it bother you to be seen as an actor for action movies, only?
I have acted in a number of movies which are not strictly action. Recently I did a comedy called Welcome to the Jungle which was really fun. Being seen as an action star is fine with me, its much better than not being seen at all.
You played a bad boy in „The Expendables 2“. How long have you been training for your final battle?
My whole life
How do you get along with other stars in the action genre, no competitiveness around?
Please remember we are making movies, it is not real life. We tend to get along just great. When we make movies together we have a lot of fun. When we go home at night we are regular people like anyone else.
But you won´t be big friends with Steven Seagal anymore, right?
I can’t really understand the origin of this question. Seagal and I don’t really know each other well, I don’t know why we wouldn’t be friends if we knew each other better.
Which one of your movies do you think has been the top one, the most challenging, the greatest?
There is no definitive answer to this. Each movie presented its own challenges, surprises, and rewards. I have so many fond memories from making many films. This is probably ultimately a question for the audience.
What kind of movies do you prefer yourself when you have time? What´s your favorite?
Well there is this Belgian Action Star that is not bad…..seriously though, I watch a wide range of films from action, to drama and comedy. I am a real movie buff. I appreciate good acting, but I am also really fascinated by the cinematography, editing and directing. Being in the business you find yourself thinking about how they did certain things, and evaluating what you think of it.
How important are movie awards for you? „Actionstars“ aren´t predestinated to win one of them very frequently, does it disappoint you?
I make my movies for my audience, for myself and for a living. Awards are nice, but they are simply a side bar to the main event.
As an actor in a US-Movie, how much freedom do you have to interpret your character?
That depends on the movie, the script and the director.
Bianca – your daughter followed your footsteps in acting – how proud are you about this as a father? How are you supporting her?
Both my daughter and my son Kris are actors. I am proud of both of them. They both show talent and tenacity. What father wouldn’t be proud !
When you think about Germany, what’s your first thought?
I like Germany, the people I have met were warm and friendly, second thought……amazing beer.
When have you ever been in Germany for the last time?
You are very Language talented, Do you still speak German?
I am primarily a speaker of French and English, but I have a bit of several other languages. I have always wished I had time to learn more languages.
What are your plans for the future? Where will we see you next?
I have a number of films coming out including Welcome to the Jungle, Enemies Closer, Universal Soldier 4 and the final version of what was originally titled Eagle Path. I have several other projects coming up for theatrical release which I am excited about, but I will have to keep them under wraps for a little while longer.
Do you want to say something special to the german fans?
You know I have a German Fan Club with Joey and the gang. They are really great folks. It is people like this who make it a pleasure for me to give my best when I make a movie.
With who would you not like to sit in a sauna?
There are several politicians that might scare me, but I am an action star, so bring it on.
